As concerned as people are about how artificial intelligence is likely to disrupt our society, there’s likely to be a surge in films about humanity that have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to thinking machines and s fully committing to erasing them from the face of the Earth. There will definitely be some of that energy in 20th century studios. The creator from director Gareth Edwards, but what stands out most in the film’s first trailer is how inexplicably surprised everyone seems to find themselves right in the middle of a robo-pocalypse.
Set in a world devastated by a nuclear cataclysm launched by a rogue AI, The creator tells the story of Joshua (John David Washington), a grieving widower and special forces agent tasked with tracking down the Creator – the one responsible for bringing the world’s killing machines online. When Joshua and his team discover that the Creator may have developed a weapon capable of finally ending the AI/human war, they set out to secure it for themselves in hopes of regaining control of the planet. Unsurprisingly, the thing Josh and his team are looking for appears to be a mechanical child called Alfie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), whose unassuming appearance presumably belies some sort of ultimate power and is meant to make us all think a little deeper about this. what it means to be really “alive”.
Obviously, Josh won’t just be able to get rid of Alfie after they meet, and their connection will likely illustrate a deeper point about humans and machines when The creator hits theaters September 29. The trailer really makes you wonder, though, if Hollywood is ever going to find a true romance well to tell these kinds of stories or if the industry is going to keep rehashing things we’ve seen and heard before.
